Digital music surpasses physical music sales

The new year has marked another nail in the coffin for CD & Vinyl music sales, as figures released this week in the US showed digital finally pushed ahead of physical sales, making up just over 50% of all music sold in 2011.

More good news for the industry is that for the first time in 10 years, sales have come out of decline.. The industry still sells only half the number of units they were moving at the turn of the millenium, but you can probably blame the [...]

Peats Ridge – YouTube live stream!

Peats Ridge 2011 has officially kicked off, so unless you’re reading this on your mobile – it’s fair to say that you didn’t make the trip  up… but this is 2011, and thanks to that magical series of tubes we can all share in the experience via the YouTube live stream!

That’s right.. you can watch the festival between now and the 1st of January from the comfort your couch (or toilet), without some dirty hippy getting his dreads getting all up [...]

Burlectricity: Christmas Burlesqe BBQ. Friday 23rd Dec.

In recent years, the popularity of burlesque has skyrocketed in Sydney & Australia – largely from the likes of Dita Von Tesse and Cher / Christina Agulera with their movie of a similar title.

Burlectricity has put it’s own unique twist on the phenomena by bringing in live reggae, hip hop, dub & electronica acts along with techno, minimal, deep house, drum & bass and dubstep DJ’s instead of the usual rockabilly bands you’d normally find [...]

But he’s not done yet. He’s planning on raising the bar & smashing the existing record by two days, taking his total set time to 1 week!

If you’re [...]

Bass Drop feat. London Elektricity, Blokhe4d & Icicle at the Arthouse Hotel

Stepping up to the decks alongside London Elektricity for his third round at Bass Drop were festival favourite Blokhe4d and neurosurgeon Icicle. In what seems to have been an attempt to please all sectors of the Sydney bass music scene, Pete Mac and Low Society hosted a thoroughly enjoyable night at the Arthouse.

Going back-to-back, Helmore and Beans went completely and utterly mental with their track selection (Joker into The Bug into Emalkay, anyone?). Not to rely merely on scene favourites [...]

Bassfreqs Podcast #019 – Bec Paton

This week’s podcast is a very personal contribution from Bec Paton.

My darling mate died, so it was for him at a awesome wake by the people that love him. Alex played UK d&b, house, broken beat and hip hop. I loved him. This was my offering.

The set starts with jungle and d&b, goes into hip-hop, broken beat, dubstep and bass music. I was trying to show how 90s music sounds are having a revival in a lot of the hot [...]

Homegrown Freqs Update

For anyone that hasn’t heard the final of the NSW leg of the Homegrown Freqs drum & bass DJ competition was held a couple of weeks ago at the Oxford Art Factory.

The night saw a number of very talented DJs take part and although “fix!” was called by certain members of the audience the judges had no choice but to award the prize to Bassdrop resident Linken. Throughout his set he displayed a level of skill and confidence on the [...]

A Guy Called Gerald, 80′s B-Boy mix

A tribute to one of hip hop’s pioneers, by one of today’s most influential artists – A Guy Called Gerald. The mix comes accompanied with this quote about the great Kool Herc.

“He was a young Jamaican American and he just wanted to throw a party. His uncle had given him the best sound system in the neighborhood, yet he had no venue to play at and he was broke. What Kool Herc chose to do could have [...]
