CUE’d up for release

Melbourne’s CUE Recordings is about to unleash it’s fourth release upon the world… and a heavy release it is, featuring an all star line-up with tracks to suit every taste. I thought that it was about time that the Bassfreqs crew was brought up to speed on this rapidly emerging label and decided to catch up with owner Tom ‘Tommy Dub’ Whitlock for a little bit of an insight into CUE.

The seeds of the label were first sown when Tommy, [...]

Digital music surpasses physical music sales

The new year has marked another nail in the coffin for CD & Vinyl music sales, as figures released this week in the US showed digital finally pushed ahead of physical sales, making up just over 50% of all music sold in 2011.

More good news for the industry is that for the first time in 10 years, sales have come out of decline.. The industry still sells only half the number of units they were moving at the turn of the millenium, but you can probably blame the [...]

Burlectricity: Christmas Burlesqe BBQ. Friday 23rd Dec.

In recent years, the popularity of burlesque has skyrocketed in Sydney & Australia – largely from the likes of Dita Von Tesse and Cher / Christina Agulera with their movie of a similar title.

Burlectricity has put it’s own unique twist on the phenomena by bringing in live reggae, hip hop, dub & electronica acts along with techno, minimal, deep house, drum & bass and dubstep DJ’s instead of the usual rockabilly bands you’d normally find [...]

Royalston – Cerulean Blue E.P.

Local drum and bass artist ‘Royalston’ finally has his début single released on Hospital records’ sister label Medschool this week. The track follows in the success of his releases on the Sick Music 2 album on Hospital, New & More Blood compilations on Medschool as well as his bootleg remix of Art Vs Science’ Magic Fountain and a huge release on Bad Taste records earlier this year.

A Guy Called Gerald, 80′s B-Boy mix

A tribute to one of hip hop’s pioneers, by one of today’s most influential artists – A Guy Called Gerald. The mix comes accompanied with this quote about the great Kool Herc.

“He was a young Jamaican American and he just wanted to throw a party. His uncle had given him the best sound system in the neighborhood, yet he had no venue to play at and he was broke. What Kool Herc chose to do could have [...]

Nokia’s new dubstep ringtone

Yep, that right, your next Nokia phone will most likely feature this ‘dubstep’ version of it’s iconic ringtone written by Valerio Alessandro Sizzi. The Italian DJ won the phone company’s competition to write a new modern version of the irritatingly memorable tune.

Homegrown Freqs – DJ Competition. Finalists Announcement!

Homegrown Freqs is a competition to discover new talented Drum and Bass DJ’s on home soil. With the inaugural event held in Melbourne last year, Twisted Audio decided to take the competition nationally to see what’s out there. Sydney’s Bass Drop got on board to host the NSW finals at Oxford Arts Factory, Thursday October 6th. Local Freq’s Bionic and Speaks will join Pete Mac on the judging panel.

I asked Pete Mac what makes a good DNB DJ, and what [...]

Korn releasing a dubstep album.. LOL FFS.

They butchered Pink Floyd – and now they’re set to do the same to dubstep…. ‘Nu metal / crossover’ outfit Korn, are set to release an all “dubstep” album for their 10th release before the years end.

Launching on November 15, “The Path To Totality” features collaborations with producers such as  Kill the Noise, 12th Planet, Noisia, datsiK, Excision, & Downlink alongside dubstep’s “it” girl….. Skrillex,.

Bassist ”Fieldy” Arvizu is quoted on NME.com saying “We’ve collaborated with six or seven producers on the new record. I’ve [...]

Why Dubstep Sucks in Sydney in 2011

I promised myself I wouldn’t use my position as a Bassfreqs contributor to rant, but I’d like to touch on a topic that many of us feel the same about but most are too afraid to discuss publicly. I’m quite possibly shooting myself in the foot writing this article, but I’m beyond caring by now. Call it airing dirty laundry, elitism, whatever, but Sydney dubstep really is a fucking joke these days. What used to be such a positive, influential [...]

RAM Records: A drum & bass history (part two)

First up, if you haven’t yet read part one you can find it here.

Part two

RAM 046: Fresh – Signal (2003)

Emerging from the split of Bad Company, Fresh dropped this hard on RAM. With it’s beautifully crafted intro the track commands you to ‘watch this space’ before delivering one of the heaviest combination of drum breaks and distorted basslines ever written. Still regularly teased into mixes by the likes of Andy C and Friction.

RAM 054: Sub Focus – X-Ray (2005)

The track that [...]
